Urbania, Italy Chiesa dei Morte (Church of Death) mummy
There are some interesting passages in the book about the mummies in Urbania. Fascinating site, and the confraternity dedicated to the dead is still preserved here. This particular mummy, of Mons. Piccini, drove me nuts. I was using his mouth as a focus point, but then when I checked the details they were always fuzzy. I had no idea why, and was concerned something was wrong with the camera or the lens–I just could not get a sharp focus on the details of the mouth, and I kept taking the same photo over and over. Then Brother Giovanni came in and started talking to me about the mummy, and mentioned that he was mummified by coating his entire body in gesso. Aha . . . I went over and inspected the mummy and realized that yes, even his teeth were covered in quarter inch layer of gesso that had been sloppily poured on. So that was why I couldn’t get any find details of the mouth, the mouth itself was coated over in a gesso paste.
