Douamont, France Verdun ossuary chapel

This site is only noted in passing in the book–it is an ossuary (and a huge one, containing the remains of the victims of the battlefield at Verdun), but the bones are not visible except through tiny portholes on the exterior of the building. The focus of the interior is instead on series of cenotaphs. It is an attractive building in any event. Because the bones are not visible and the structure doesn’t really fit into the narrative I was constructing in the book, I didn’t really need photos from this sites–which was good, because the representative I spoke to was only person I encountered in four years of working on this project whom I would have to call an absolute jerk, and I doubt I would have fared well if his cooperation had been of importance.
