Near Bangkok, Thailand (Bangkunthien) buffalo skull pyramid
I wrote a story about this site in the Sun a couple years ago, but unfortunately it is not online. The abbot of a Buddhist monastery decided to build a huge pyramid out of buffalo skulls. This was going to include a central cave with an image of the Buddha in it, and stretch all the way to an old Lao Airlines plane which he had also acquired–the plane can be seen in the distance. The door and cockpit of the plane would be the entrance to a passage through the skulls which would lead to the central cave. Unfortunately the last time I was in Thailand I visited the monastery and found that very little additional work has been completed, and even more unfortunately the plane seems to have disappeared and been replaced by a Mercedes Benz–still a nice touch, but considerably more pedestrian than an airplane.
